WHY DO WOMEN EXPERIENCE HAIR LOSS AFTER HAVING A BABY?

Aneta (Megi) Mortlock, the founder of the UK brand Megiwellness, spent years in the haircare industry and observed that many brands failed to address the common hair changes women experience during different phases of their lives.

One significant phase is postpartum, where many new mothers experience excessive hair loss shortly after giving birth. As hormone levels take time to normalise after pregnancy, it is not uncommon for postpartum mums to notice thinning hair or even patches of baldness.

This week's Buy Women Built featured blog has been written by Megi to discusses these challenges and offer insights into managing hair loss during this period.

Postpartum Hair Loss: An Inconvenient Challenge for New Mothers

Some women may experience excessive hair loss shortly after becoming a mother. It takes time after pregnancy for hormone levels to return to normal, so it's not uncommon for postpartum mums to notice thinning hair or even patches of baldness.

This often occurs about three-four months after birth, due to a decrease in estrogen levels. You may be dreading washing or brushing your hair, but please remember - this type of hair loss is a temporary condition and usually resolves within a year or sooner.

You may have noticed, for example, that your hair became thicker when you were
pregnant. The hormone oestrogen was responsible for this, making your hair grow faster and less likely to fall out.

However, after giving birth to your little one, you may find that all that extra hair you gained during your pregnancy now starts to come loose and shed. This is why you may experience postpartum hair loss in the first few months after your baby is born.

WHY DOES IT OCCUR?

Essentially, the surplus hair that grew (or didn’t fall out) during pregnancy is now falling out. In a way, although it may seem like hair ‘loss’, it’s actually just things returning to as they were before you were pregnant.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Postpartum hair loss is a common occurrence and usually resolves on its own. However, there are a few things you can do to help manage it:

1. Be gentle with your hair - avoid tight hairstyles and excessive heat styling.
2. Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals that support hair health.
3. Consider using volumizing products to give the appearance of thicker hair.
4. If your hair loss has lasted for a while and you are keen to resolve, try using the growth stimulating Shampoo and Conditioner like MEGI Wellness - really massage it in to the scalp. It will take a few months, but it is proven that it helps.
5. If you feeling that your loosing more hair then before your pregnancy, you can introduce Growth Stimulating Serum and Supplement ( if you breastfeeding please ask your doctor for advice).
